Mercury
Ford Motor Company has a mid-tier but premium priced vehicle division called Mercury in Dearborn, Michigan that sits between Ford and Lincoln. The final versions of Mercury rolled out in late 2010 with 2011 model years. Many people today associate the brand with Ford-built, easy-to-service, cars and sport utility vehicles like the Grand Marquis, Milan, and Mariner.
Information About Mercury
Mercury is founded by the Ford Motor Company under the direction of Edsel Ford in 1938 to meet the need for a new line of cars between Ford and Lincoln. The first car produced, the Mercury 8, helps define the new marque as American vehicles that stand a step above competitors in quality for years to come. However, Mercury is less able to maintain sales over time. As a result, in 2010, the Ford Motor Company decides to discontinue Mercury’s entire lineup. The last Mercury ever produced is the Grand Marquis, built on January 4, 2011, at Ford’s St. Thomas, Ontario, assembly plant.
Today, practical benefits drive used car buyers to Mercury. You can count on Ford-era engineering and easy-to-get parts and service for your car or truck. Plus, you find good value when buying an easy-to-drive, traditionally designed vehicle.
Most Mercury models that are popular among shoppers have recognizable names, such as Grand Marquis for full-size comfort and durability, Mariner for compact SUV utility, Milan for a mid-sized sedan, and Mountaineer for SUV capability. Most buyers look for vehicles with clean history records, no rust, and popular trim levels that include many comfort features. These are a few indicators that make it easier to find a used Mercury even though the name is discontinued.
A few verified Mercury stats to use when selling your car:
- Since Ford pulled its last Mercury models from dealerships in 2010, there are now no new Mercury vehicles on the market. All Mercury cars currently on the road are considered used vehicles. (Reuters; WardsAuto)
- The last Mercury to be produced is a Grand Marquis and was manufactured at St. Thomas, ON, on January 4, 2011. (Old Cars Weekly; Elgin County Archives)
- The four door sedan 2010 Mercury Milan is recognized with a 2010 Top Safety Pick award by the IIHS, though award criteria for prior years may differ and should not be compared with today’s testing. (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety)
- The 2009 Mercury Mariner receives a Good rating from IIHS crashworthiness testing in both the moderate overlap front and side tests. However, it receives a Marginal rating for roof strength. (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety)
- According to the EPA rating for the Grand Marquis FFV, it has an estimated fuel economy on gasoline of 16 miles per gallon in the city and 24 miles per gallon on the highway. If you switch to E85, that estimate drops to 12 miles per gallon in the city and 17 miles per gallon on the highway. (FuelEconomy.gov (DOE/EPA))
- The starting MSRP of the 2011 Mercury Grand Marquis (LS) is $29,935 when new. (Edmunds)
- According to the 2010 Mercury bumper to bumper warranty booklet for the model year, there is a three-year or 36,000-mile bumper to bumper warranty with the vehicle. The vehicle powertrain has a five-year or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty. (Ford)
- Ford Motor Company and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued warnings about potential dangers involving their vehicle lineup Ford Lincoln and Mercury equipped with speed control options. Unless the recall work is completed there is a risk that these vehicles catch on fire while parked and not turned on. (NHTSA; NHTSA)
- The highest number of cars that Mercury sells in one year, as recorded by Wards Automotive, is 527,198 in 1984. That figure is important for understanding how to compare classic or collectible era Mercury models versus low volume vehicles produced after that. (WardsAuto)
