    1 Series BMW

The BMW 1 Series has been around since 2004 and sits below the 3 Series as BMW’s smallest regular production model in many markets. It offers hatchbacks mainly in Europe, but in the U.S. the coupe and convertible were sold starting in 2008. The 1 Series allowed BMW to compete in the premium compact segment while keeping the brand true to its philosophy of balanced ride and handling with superior engineering quality.

The U.S. coupe and convertible versions of the BMW 1 Series were discontinued after the 2013 model year, but the hatchback version continues to be produced and sold in several countries around the world.

BMW designed the 1 Series to provide a great driving experience while also giving shoppers more choices when looking for a luxury vehicle. One of the 1 Series’ most popular selling points was its youthful persona and comfortable driving dynamics, which attracted individuals looking to upgrade to something more premium. Urban professionals looking to purchase their first BMW and individuals who place more value on road feel than rear-seat capacity could enjoy the 1 Series. Additionally, the BMW 1 Series, in coupe and convertible form, appealed to car enthusiasts wanting a two-door BMW but did not want a larger grand touring model vehicle.

Buyers found the BMW 1 Series’ combination of a powerful engine, compact size, and high-quality interior materials appealing, but what most stands out with American buyers is their opportunity to purchase an inline-six engine, a manual transmission, or a high-performance turbocharged engine, such as the 135i, along with upscale cabin materials, brand recognition as a luxury automaker, and a very sporty driving experience compared with other small luxury vehicles.

    BMW 1 Series Recall History

    • The 2016 driver side air bag recall for the Takata air bag involves BMW’s recall of some of its 2008-2013 1 Series production models that are coupes and coupes with the “M” performance package and convertibles due to the potential for the driver side frontal air bag inflator to rupture upon deployment with possible injury from shrapnel inside of the cabin; this affects an estimated 32,620 coupes and an estimated 28,160 convertibles in total across all model year input data.
    • Recall for PCV heater on 2017 BMW 128i. Some vehicles in this model year have a defect that causes the positive crankcase ventilation valve heater to potentially create a short circuit. This can lead to melting of the plastic parts on the vehicle and increases the risk of a fire occurring while parked. The recall affects an additional 740,561 vehicles in different BMW model lines.
    • Recall regarding wiring for blower regulator 2019: BMW is recalling some 128i, 135i and 135is Coupes that could have wiring/harness connectors on the blower regulator overheat due to poor installation methods and/or bolt malfunction. In extreme conditions, the wiring can melt and pose a fire hazard. Total number of affected vehicles is approximately 41,981 model years range from November 1, 2007 through September 5, 2011 built at the 1 Series production facility.
    • The 2020 Takata air bag interim replacement recall involves BMW recalling certain 2008 to 2013 128i and 135i coupe models, and certain 2008 to 2013 M Series coupe models that have received a non desiccated driver side frontal air bag inflator as an interim replacement part. There are approximately 59,965 total vehicles affected by this recall, including approximately 2,108 1 Series coupes and approximately 2,355 1 Series convertibles.
    • 2022 Emergency Stop Light Switches Recall BMW widens the coverage of the emergency stop light switch campaign to include certain 2006 to 2013 BMWs, including model year 2008 to 2013 128i Convertible and N52 engine equipped vehicles. Exposure to excessive moisture may cause a short circuit in the blow by heater, creating a potential fire hazard. There are 917,106 recalled U.S. vehicles, including approximately 19,077 1 Series convertibles.

    BMW Overview

In Germany in 1916, BMW began as an aircraft engine producer. By the 1920s, it had started producing motorcycles and, by 1928, automobiles. The reputation of BMW was built upon compact, sporty sedans and luxury models, including a high performance division known as BMW M, which is formed in 1972. Thus, BMW’s history is wide ranging. It has roots in aviation, developed as a manufacturer of racing cars, offers a variety of premium road cars, and owns other well known brands, including MINI and Rolls Royce Motor Cars.
