    2 Series BMW

In 2014, the BMW 2 Series launched, replacing the previous 1 Series two-door models that moved to the new 2 Series. The first U.S. models were the 228i and M235i. Both models created a clearer distinction from each other compared to other coupe lines and allow the brand to define an entry-level coupe lineup. BMW took a new approach with this model line by creating a luxury compact car with sportier designs and performance.

The BMW 2 Series remains a member of the current U.S. lineup and offers both coupe and Gran Coupe body styles.

Designed for those looking for a luxury sports car that is smaller than other cars on the market, the BMW 2 Series includes many of the same elements previous coupe buyers sought, including looks, status, and an intimate cabin experience. After the release of the Gran Coupe, BMW was able to extend its reach to commuters and young professionals that prefer four doors, easy cabin access, and a city-friendly shape while staying true to the value-oriented positioning of the BMW brand.

The 2 Series receives recognition as a result of having a great proportion of visually attractive body lines, a solid selection of powerful engines, an optional xDrive all-wheel-drive system, and a high level of interior comfort at an affordable price for the category. There are combinations of entry-level, fuel-efficient models, performance-oriented M Performance models, and full M models, thereby giving this nameplate an atypical breadth of product from such an entry-level vehicle.

Additionally, this vehicle offers luxury-segment shoppers a high degree of technological sophistication, a distinct size and style, and exceptional day-to-day usability compared to larger, more expensive premium vehicles.

    BMW 2 Series Recall History

    • BMW also recalled certain 2022 230i vehicles as part of a larger starter-relay recall. The recall involved corrosion in the engine starter relay. If moisture enters the relay, the relay can short circuit and overheat, increasing the risk of a fire. Inclusion in the recall, which includes 196,355 affected vehicles, covers all vehicles manufactured from 2007 through 2019.
    • BMW recalled certain 2014-2015 2 Series coupe vehicles for head air bag inflators. The inflator can develop gas leaks or rupture due to defects in welds at the weld junctions. BMW manufactures 851 units of these particular affected models.
    • BMW recalled certain 2024 230i and other BMW Group vehicles for a steering-gear issue. The steering gear may not have been tightened properly, which could allow it to loosen and reduce vehicle handling and control. The campaign affected approximately 201 vehicles.
    • The 2023 rear-seat side air bag cover-panel recall involved certain 2023 230i, 230i xDrive, M240i, and M240i xDrive Coupe models have the possibility that their second-row backrest panel breaks when the side airbags deploy. A total of 804 vehicles are recalled in this action.
    • BMW issued a 2023 seat-belt warning recall for certain 2019-2022 BMW vehicles, including certain 2020-2022 228i xDrive Gran Coupe models to remedy inability to provide necessary audible alert for use of seat belt device is issued by BMW North America, LLC; 144 affected vehicles have their audio receiver module software updated.
    • The 2021 seat-belt retractor recall involved certain 2021 BMW and MINI vehicles. The passenger front safety belt automatic locking retractor may deactivate too early, which could prevent a child restraint from being secured properly. A total of 21,537 vehicles are affected by this safety campaign.
    • The 2021 roof-liner support recall involved certain 2021 BMW 230i and M240i vehicles. The roof-liner support may separate during a crash when the head air bag deploys, increasing the risk of injury. The recall affected approximately two vehicles.
    • BMW recalled certain 2020-2021 228i, 228i xDrive, and M235i xDrive vehicles for a sunroof-control issue. If the driver initiates an automatic closure of the sunroof, and the vehicle key status is changed to “off” or “lock,” the sunroof may continue to close. The compliance recall affected approximately 14,011 vehicles.
    • BMW recalled certain 2019-2020 230i, 230i xDrive, M240i, M240i xDrive, and M2 Competition coupe models for improperly folded or assembled driver and passenger knee air bag modules. Improper assembly could prevent the air bags from deploying as intended, increasing the risk of injury. The recall affected approximately 5,079 units on the above models.
